This paper draws on data from the 1995 European Labour Force Survey (ELFS) to investigate and compare the characteristics of individuals participating in vocational training in Germany, France, the Netherlands, Portugal, Sweden and the United Kingdom. It aims to compile a profile of how different countries are addressing the re-skilling of their workforces. The incidence and intensity of both on-the-job and off-the-job training is examined. A literature survey describes previous studies of the determinants of participation in workplace training and the following sections of the paper describe the data on which the paper is based, the results of the study and the conclusions. The findings revealed that the pattern of training in each country is mainly determined by the national system of education. Show less
